How to get your family on board with home organising

Ever feel like you’re the only one in your house trying to get things tidy and in order? Organising a home can be a big job and sometimes it feels like getting your family to help is the biggest part of it!

Here are some tips to help you get your family on board and organising with you:

  1. Sell the destination

Make the benefits outweigh the effort by telling them what they have to gain by helping. Maybe it’s spending less time tidying their room and more time with friends, or saving time (and stress) by knowing where everything is as they dash out the door. It might be being able to see and find things in their wardrobe, or not being embarrassed to have friends round for dinner.

  1. Set achievable goals

The house is not going to be organised in a day, so start small. Celebrate small successes and build momentum to keep everyone motivated.

  1. Lead by example

If you want your family to engage with decluttering, you need to show them how it’s done. Decluttering by stealth is tempting, but for it to be a sustainable process, you need to help everyone understand how to decide what to keep and what to let go of. And then respect their decisions!

  1. Empower creativity

Decluttering is only half the journey. Let your family come up with creative ideas for storing what you keep. You never know what bright ideas they might have!

  1. Establish a routine

This is a long-term thing, so establishing a routine for maintaining the organisation is critical.  Work together to divide up the tasks to encourage commitment.

  1. Make it fun

Decluttering and organising can be hard work, but don’t take it too seriously! Play music, have snacks, build some competitive spirit and celebrate your accomplishments along the way.

Getting your family on board with home organisation requires patience, good communication and a positive attitude. By working together and taking it one step at a time, you can create a tidy, organised, and functional living space that everyone will love. And remember, the most important thing is to have fun and enjoy the process!
