Our client had lived in her home with her husband for several years, but was struggling to make it work. They had lots of beautiful new crockery and glassware waiting in storage since their wedding and had talked many times about “just sorting out the kitchen” before bringing it into their home. Unfortunately, it was one of those things that never quite happened. A busy job with lots of travel, meant that the hoped-for time, energy and capacity never materialised. The kitchen stayed the same and they got used to working around things that annoyed them on a daily basis.
Finally our client got in touch for some help. She wanted to really enjoy the process of making their home into what she’d dreamed it could be and knew she couldn’t do it by herself.
Creating a calm, composed, organised and beautiful kitchen was the order of the day. Clear surfaces, a place for everything and matching spice jars were all on the list!
The open-plan kitchen, dining and sitting room is a gorgeous, light and airy space in the roof of a five storey Georgian townhouse, but the storage is awkward. Not being hugely enthusiastic cooks meant the small amount of kitchen cabinetry was enough storage for the couple’s pots and pans and pantry ingredients. The struggle came with the fun stuff – all the items our client needed for entertaining!
Crockery and glassware were stored in overly full cabinets, and there was no clear system as to what went where, which meant getting to the bits they needed when they needed them was challenging and frustrating.
During our planning meeting before our organising day, we found a solution.
A deep, shelved cupboard in the eaves, just off the kitchen area was filled with a collection of old furniture and rarely used items that had been squirrelled away. The client was enthusiastic about having a good clear out of this space and utilising it as overflow storage for the kitchen where things like booze, ice buckets and vases would be easy to access, but out of the way day-to-day.
Planning done, we sourced everything we needed to create the function and aesthetic the client wanted to achieve.
On project day we started with a thorough edit of the kitchen and eaves storage areas, and the client was ruthless!!
Utilising the extra space of the eaves cupboard, we removed the unnecessary items from the main kitchen to create additional space in those prime, easy to reach cupboards. These were used for those everyday items to make using the kitchen feel as easy to use as possible.
We grouped and categorised every item to create clear zones within the space, using a combination of clear acrylic pantry bins, and beautiful glass jars with acacia wood lids to contain the different categories. This established a really robust organisational system, with the style the client was looking for. And of course, some matching spice jars to top it all off!
